What Is Child and Adolescent Therapy?

Child and adolescent therapy is a form of therapy applied to address emotional and developmental challenges experienced during childhood and adolescence. The age range is generally between 5 and 18. The aim of therapy is to understand how the child’s or adolescent’s mind works, to reduce the related symptoms, and to ensure psychological well-being. The therapist accompanies the child/adolescent regarding the issues that distress them and may work together with the parents to overcome these difficulties.

Adolescent therapy aims to help young people make sense of their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Technically, it may take the form of traditional talk therapy, but it can also include various techniques that reflect the ways young people express themselves, such as art therapy.

In addition to talk therapy, play therapy may also be used to understand how children’s minds work and how they interpret the world around them. By communicating with the therapist through play, the child expresses themself, their relationships, and the things that bother them in their world.
