What Is Therapy? What Is Psychotherapy?
Therapy is a psychological process that aims to resolve people’s problems, improve their quality of life, and reduce sources of stress by examining their emotions, thoughts, ways of perceiving life, and beliefs. In individual therapy, this process is carried out through collaboration between the therapist and the client.
The therapy process is much more than a simple heart-to-heart chat. In this process, the aim is for clients to notice the situations that make their lives difficult and how they perceive these situations, to get to know themselves better, to better understand what they do and why, and to develop healthier coping styles. During this process, the therapist listens carefully and nonjudgmentally to the client’s world. In this journey of getting to know and understanding the client, they jointly create the roadmap they will follow in therapy.
In short, therapy is a self-discovery process in which, by talking with a mental health professional, you make better sense of your problems, begin to know yourself better, decide what you want to change and adjust in your life, and take action to improve your mental health and maintain your well-being.
