What Is Emotion-Focused Therapy?

Emotion-focused therapies are based on the belief that emotions lie at the center of life experiences and shape how a person perceives themselves and their environment.

When emotions become overwhelming and start to cause distress, they can lead to psychiatric difficulties and challenges in a person’s life by giving rise to pathological symptoms.

Session Process in Emotion-Focused Therapy

In emotion-focused therapies, sessions are generally structured around in-depth work on emotions, exercises for expressing emotions, and building emotional awareness.

The number and frequency of sessions may vary according to individual needs. They are usually held once a week and last 45–60 minutes. On average, there is one session per week, but in cases the therapist deems appropriate, it may also be possible to meet once every two weeks or several times a week.
